My Foray into e-Publishing
In 2018 I stumbled into a six-month-long experience that changed my life. The experience was so profound it motivated me to write a book about it. You can read about more about my experience and the book at dlorenwest.com.
I ended up doing the book in three iterations: the first, for Apple Books, my preferred platform because I am an Apple person. 🙂 Plus, the interactive features which Apple e-books allow, like slideshows, internal and external links, among others, appealed to me and fit the nature and content of my book. It was my original intention to just do an Apple e-book. But, by the time I had finished, I realized I needed to do a Kindle version because, even though I’m an Apple fanatic, most people inhabit the PC/Android world, and the majority of people reading e-books are on that platform.
So, I did a Kindle e-book version. I discovered that I needed to re-format the book layout to comply with Kindle requirements, which are different from Apple’s. After completing the Kindle formatting, I found that I could publish a paperback version, free, and it would be printed on-demand, whenever it is purchased on Amazon. Alas, the print version is only black and white, while digital versions have color!
Finally, I reformatted the book AGAIN for the paperback version (because of size differences and other requirements). What I discovered is that a lot of people are still enamored with physical, paper, books, even if I’m not. Fine! I can do that!
The Take-Away: What I learned was that I needed to determine the requirements at the outset, so that I didn’t have to do so many different layouts/versions. But being the first time I had done this, I was a little short-sighted, I guess. Or maybe inexperienced is a better description. The solution is technical, so I won’t bore you with it here. Suffice it to say, your book will be easier and less time-consuming than mine was, especially if you take advantage of my hard-earned knowledge and experience. Let me help you!
